NUMBERDATECOMMENT
103/12/2019NEW HORIZONS FOR ALLIED EXPLORATION & GEOTECHNICS LIMITED
The remaining directors, together with all management and staff wish to announce an exciting new stage in the Company’s evolution following the recent majority shareholding acquisition by Raeburn Drilling & Geotechnical Ltd. (RDG), based in Hamilton, Scotland. Keith Peacock, who has steered the company since its inception in 1988, has stood down from the business and his role as Managing Director in order to facilitate the acquisition process. RDG, like us, have a wealth of site investigation experience having been involved successfully in the industry for over 30 years.

It is anticipated that the acquisition will open a new chapter on account of the excellent synergy that exists between the two companies and the underlying ethos we share with respect to providing a high quality, fully accredited, in-house service of any size and scope. We will retain our name and identity, with this new relationship enhancing the profile of both organisations in terms of experience and capabilities; as well as introducing RDG’s extensive sonic drilling and bespoke low ground pressure fleet into the North and Midlands.

It all adds up to an exciting prospect, which we fully welcome and endorse.

RIG DEVELOPMENTS

The Project

The original carrier for the rotary rig was a six-wheel (20 tonne) army truck which admittedly had seen better days. This rendered the rig effectively redundant although the drilling head, hydraulics, pump, mast and component systems were perfectly functional. Instead of consigning the rig as scrap it was decided to refurbish, recondition and mount on an appropriately sized tracked carrier. Thereby in the process the Company retained the additional capacity the unit originally offered to our in-house drilling plant resource base.

Nearing Completion

Thanks to the project oversight provided by our Operations Manager, John Moyle, Rockbit Limited (Wallsend) were commissioned to design, source and fabricate the major elements of the rig conversion works. The works were undertaken over a period of about 12 - 14 weeks and included swapping out the old army truck chassis and its subsequent replacement with a tracked excavator base. Those "hard knocks" and general wear-and-tear have all been attended to with a high standard of care and attention.

Complete - Investigation Ready

The old Boart Longyear rig has now been transformed into a resource offering the enhanced drilling capacity (+200m depths and larger diameters) of its previous incarnation, but now includes the flexibility that it can track across even the softest surface conditions. Inclines can also be managed by the track system which is remote controlled by the operator. Rubber cleats are added to the tracks to mitigate surface damage on road pavement. The rig, informally "The Beast", is now fully fitted out and ready for its first appointment.

Low Headroom (Basement) Rig

1

Requirement

The Company had received a number of enquiries for cable percussion drilling in confined access locations, such as commercial buildings, low headroom industrial units and parking structures. Sourcing drilling plant to facilitate Client requirements in these situations was problematic and often significantly expensive. Lead-in times were also less than dependable due to the reliance on others.

2

Implementation

It was decided after failing to provide a compliant tender for work in Newcastle that the Company should meet the circumstances head-on and customise (and cut-down) an existing Pilcon 2000 (SA08) rig to enhance our services. The design was determined by the Site Operations Manager with the conversion fabrication undertaken by our friends at Rockbit Limited (Wallsend).

3

Deployment

The implementation went as planned and the unit was first trialed during works for a Gateshead Quayside development; which concluded successfully. Specialised cut-down (shortened) tooling and casing were also purchased to assist due to the reduced height of operation.
